Notes For Thursday, July 24, 2003

This is stunning: "A statewide cable news network late Wednesday pulled the plug on two Democratic Party television ads that targeted Gov. Jeb Bush and House Speaker Johnnie Byrd. The ads accuse the Republican leaders of using the ongoing medical malpractice stalemate for their own political gain. The two 30-second ads were slated to begin Wednesday night on the Florida News Channel, which is seen in several of the state's major media markets but not Orlando. But Bob Brillante, the network's managing partner, voiced concerns about their accuracy." See "Network won't run 2 ads for Democrats" See also " Network refuses Democrats' ad". That liberal media at work again. Strange, we don't recall them having any problems with Bush's objectively false attacks against McBride.

On a side note, don't you love how the GOP has been mischaracterizing the malpractice cap debate as about an "access to health-care crisis". Finally there's more on Florida's FCAT follies in "Holding them back".

"Jeb!" Has A Problem With Facts - "A re you beginning to get the feeling that Jeb Bush has become the Baghdad Bob of the Apalachee Parkway? It seems the much-vaunted propaganda campaign over medical malpractice insurance reform has evolved into the gubernatorial equivalent of his older brother's dubious Niger/Iraq uranium claims. What is it with these guys that giving a straight answer is more of a challenge than the Washington Generals prevailing over the Harlem Globetrotters? " See "Truth-Telling In Tallahassee? Wow, What A Concept!"

What Were You Thinking, She Was Always A Right Wing Wacko In A Hair Helmet - "Last spring, top Florida Democrats condemned the appointment of a new lieutenant governor as improper and illegal, but they decided against filing a lawsuit to demand a special election. They said they expected Gov. Jeb Bush's pick, Orlando businesswoman Toni Jennings, would make the governor more mainstream. But just a few months later, Democrats say they're disappointed. 'At the time, we thought Jennings would be a moderating force, but I haven't seen any evidence of Jeb Bush moving away from the extreme right,' Democratic PartyChairman Scott Maddox said." See "Jennings a disappointment to Democratic Party leaders".

FCAT Madness - "An FCAT for college juniors?"

Oh Yeah, Them? They're Around Here Somewhere - "DCF is still losing track of children, data show". The Miami Herald is too nice in "Regier's report card is mixed".

You Too? "States compare notes on fiscal ills".

Don't Like It? Send Your Kids To Gulliver Prep - "Record schools budget still cuts programs". Of course, Jeb was partial to Gulliver Prep for his children, so hasn't a clue as to what the funding fuss is all about. Indeed, the entire Bush family is crazy about snotty private schools, having variously attended: the "Kinkaid School, Houston, TX; Gulliver Prep, Miami, FL; St. Albans School, Washington, DC; Miss Porter's in Framington, CT, and Phillips Academy, Andover, MA. Also, St. George's School, Newport, RI"

Penelas - Deutsch Death Match - "U.S. Rep. Peter Deutsch of Pembroke Pines, who has already called Miami-Dade County mayor and Senate rival Alex Penelas a ''pathological liar'' and a traitor to his party, filed a complaint Wednesday with the Federal Elections Commission accusing Penelas of illegal fundraising." See "Deutsch: Donations to Penelas campaign were coerced".

We'll Believe It When We See It - "Gov. Bush now needs to compromise on malpractice stalemate. The failure of Florida's lawmakers to rein in soaring medical-malpractice insurance premiums is getting as monotonous as summer TV reruns. The Legislature might have agreed to act several sessions ago if not for Gov. Jeb Bush's stubborn demand for a draconian $250,000 cap on jury awards for pain and suffering to victims of medical malpractice. Mr. Bush has blasted the state Senate for resisting caps, but its members have shown far more reason and flexibility throughout the debate than either the governor or his eager-to-please followers in the House." See "Time to bend".

Byrd Bucks - "Florida House Speaker Byrd has abused the process with fund raising." See ". . . and dialing for dollars". 7:35 AM [Go to current Florida Politics site (no popup ads)]
