Notes For Tuesday, June 17, 2003

It is so nice to read - as spun by the Florida Times Union - that Floridians love the Bush boys. "The latest InsiderAdvantage poll, conducted just last week, shows that while President Bush earns an overwhelming approval rating of 64 percent in the Sunshine State, his brother, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, gets the thumbs up from 55 percent of Floridians. The poll has a margin of error of 4 percent."

Pigs At The Trough - "The state legislature's second special session of the year started on a partisan note Monday, as House Republicans beat back a Democratic proposal to extend a ban on fund-raising while lawmakers are meeting." See "Fund-raising ban extension killed". Hmm . . . perhaps the Florida GOP likes special sessions after all.

According to an article in the St Pete Times, "Twenty fundraisers are scheduled by 19 Republican House members. Many of them are co-sponsored by House Speaker Johnnie Byrd, R-Plant City, and speaker-designate Allan Bense, R-Panama City, while others are planned by health care lobbyists interested in medical malpractice legislation being considered this week. All of the fundraisers are early evening events at bars, clubs and offices a couple of blocks from the Capitol."

Special Session - "Legislature meets to deal with crisis". See also "Special session on malpractice begins", "Legislators at loggerheads" and "Lawmakers sniff higher malpractice cap compromise".

The Tallahassee Democrat contends that the "Malpractice fix must be shared by all".

The Arrogance Of The Man - "The only thing keeping Florida from enacting badly needed tort reform, Gov. Jeb Bush reportedly said last week, are a handful of 'wandering senators who need to get back on the reservation.'" Can you believe the arrogance.

Fortunately, "[t]hat comment brought an unusually sharp retort from one of the 'wandering senators,' Mike Bennett of Bradenton. 'I am so disappointed that our governor is so far into the pockets of the insurance industry that he felt the need to blindside me like that.'" See "No magic bullet".

We, too, are "so disappointed that our governor is so far into the pockets of the insurance industry . . . ."

Bet They Don't Have These Problems At Gulliver Prep - "Most school districts will have to reduce the average class size in elementary schools this fall - but only a few have to take immediate steps at the high school level, new data shows." See "Florida releases district class size numbers". Indeed, the Bush family has a serious aversion to public schools, with various members having attended "Kinkaid School, Houston, TX; Gulliver Prep, Miami, FL; St. Albans School, Washington, DC; Miss Porter's in Framington, CT, and Phillips Academy, Andover, MA" See "Celebrity Prep Schools". No wonder our "Jeb!" has little, if any, contact with the real world.

The Florida GOP At Work - "Artless budget cuts".

Sheer Stupidity - "The leader of Florida Atlantic University's money-raising arm has taken back a $750,000 gift of his own, blasting the state for coming up short in matching it." See "FAU patron takes back $750,000 gift after state fails to match funds".

How's Your Credit Rating? "Customers with bad credit pay more for homeowners and auto insurance, or, conversely, those with good credit pay less. That has been the case in Florida since the mid-1990s. At last month's special session, lawmakers voted to make it officially legal." See "The cost of bad credit".
