Notes For Saturday, June 14, 2003

"According to Human Rights Watch, our state has more citizens deprived of their voting rights than any other." Now that we have your attention, go read: "In Florida, who has the right to vote?" Incredible.

"Politics Pulling Apart University Governance" "Even as Gov. Bush tries to sell Floridians on his education-reform fantasy, the faculty representative to the state Board of Governors becomes the latest to split the governor's so-called seamless education system." ... "Of the new board's 17 members, however, 14 are key political supporters of Gov. Bush, who appointed them. That majority exists 'primarily to rubber-stamp what (Education Commissioner) Jim Horne or the governor have brought to them,' Professor Briggs said. 'I think there'll probably have to be a change of regime or lawsuits for Amendment 11 to be enacted.' The resignation of Board of Governors Chairman Thomas Petway, however, probably isn't what Professor Briggs had in mind. Gov. Bush has replaced his close friend and political ally, who now will co-chair President Bush's 2004 reelection campaign in Florida, with another Jacksonville businessman: Peter Rummell, CEO of the state's largest private landowner, the St. Joe Co." See "Politics pulling apart university governance".

Special Session - "Gov. Jeb Bush has expanded the agenda for next week's special session to include high school graduation requirements and changes to Florida's election laws, including elimination of the runoff election for 2004." See "Bush adds education, election bills to session".

Morgan - "Scurry for money is session's speciality".

Graham - "Many observers, including us, who have admired much of his work in public life, especially during his two terms as Florida governor, can only wonder what is driving him to seek the presidency, especially after his recent heart problems. There's much speculation that his real goal is the second spot on the Democratic ticket in 2004, a notion he vigorously denies. It seems clear he's not completely happy as a member of the minority party in the Senate. Most Democratic senators aren't getting much ink these days." See "The Peculiarities Of Bob Graham"

This ought to get him some headlines: "Graham: Give gay couples a tax break".

Florida Times Union Slams King - "Senate President Jim King already has declared the special session next week to be an exercise in futility and it hasn't even begun." See "King, James".

Hillsborough Dems Leadership Fight - "Fight To Be Democratic Chairman A Brouhaha".

With The Election Over And "Jeb!" Safely Elected, DCF Is Now Going Down The Tubes - "Children and families agency whipsawed by budget changes".

Abortion Fight Continues; Bush Seeks To Intervene In Appeal - "The state Friday asked to join the appeal of an Orlando woman who wants to be named a legal guardian for the fetus of J.D.S., a severely retarded rape victim. Gov. Jeb Bush requested the action with the 5th District Court of Appeal in Daytona Beach. It is the latest legal move in a controversial case that appears destined to make it to the Florida Supreme Court. Jennifer Wixtrom, who wants to be a guardian for the fetus, has asked the appellate court for an emergency ruling to overturn the decision of a circuit court judge in Orlando." See "State wants to join appeal to get guardian for fetus".
