Senator Calls For Investigation Into Rehnquist - Bush Affair - "Accusing Gov. Jeb Bush of misleading the public about why he wanted to delay a critical audit of the state's massive pension fund in the midst of his reelection campaign, Florida Democrats on Thursday called for a legislative investigation into whether the delay was politically motivated." Peter Wallstein writes that: "[t]he political story line reads like a novel.

"- The [resigned] HHS inspector general who delayed the inquiry at Shanahan's direct request is Janet Rehnquist, daughter of U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist."

"- The younger Rehnquist is under fire for a variety of allegations -- including her handling of the Florida pension fund audit -- and has submitted her resignation."

" - President Bush -- Gov. Bush's brother -- oversees HHS, and his own political future depended in part on the governor's reelection last year -- a connection that is not lost on Democrats."

"- HHS documents show that Shanahan, aformer aide to Vice President Dick Cheney, called Rehnquist April 15 -- just days before the audit was to begin -- leaving a message reading, `Urgent. If possible call today.'''

This is only the tip of the iceberg.

Our Governor Fiddles - "Gov. . . . Bush plans to travel to the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Saturday to thank the base's outgoing commander for his service. Bush also plans to address troops while at the base, thanking them for 'the things they do every day to protect Florida and the nation.'" Story.
